We are having a reading of ‘The Accrington Pals’ on Thursday 26th April at 7.30pm at the Theatre. The performances will run from 6th to 10th November next and will be SLT’s contribution to the centenary commemorations of the end of the Great War on Sunday the 11th. We hope to be able to dress the Theatre appropriately with some artifacts and memorabilia of the time and have the front of house staff and extras in costume, together with music and possibly refreshments of the period.
The play itself has a cast of ten, five male and five female, and is based on the true story of the volunteer Pals battalion and, more particularly, the effect on the women they leave behind. When rumours of the devastating tragedy of The Somme began to circulate the wives and girlfriends didn’t accept the official line that all was going well and found unexpected strength and resource to ask questions of those in charge. There are therefore several very strong female roles to fill.
